HICKORY, N.C. —  It was announced earlier today during a press conference in Las Vegas that four Speedway Motorsports (SMI) properties will play host to the Global RallyCross Championship (GRC) series in 2012.

The four SMI events will help build a six-race 2012 schedule for the GRC.  At each of the SMI venues the GRC will be serving as a companion event to either a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series or IZOD IndyCar Series event.

The dates scheduled for SMI properties are as follows:

May 26                    Charlotte Motor Speedway

June 9                     Texas Motor Speedway

July 14                     New Hampshire Motor Speedway

September 29          Las Vegas Motor Speedway

These four events will be joined on the 2012 GRC schedule by a to-be-announced event on September 1st and the annual X-GAMES competition presented by ESPN on June 30th – July 1st from Los Angeles, California.

The second season of GRC will see this six-race schedule build on the three-race schedule of the inaugural 2011 season.  GRC is the American adapation of the long popular international event of rallycar.

“Speedway Motorsports has always been committed to providing the very best in motorsports entertainment, and the Global Rallycross Championship will be a tremendous complement to several of our NASCAR and IndyCar weekends,” said Marcus Smith, president and chief operating officer of Speedway Motorsports. “It’s the ultimate combination of action sports and motorsports where ‘big air’ meets high speed. These drivers combine racing, drifting and stunt jumps into a high-impact show with a jaw-dropping WOW factor.”

GRC president Brian Gale at today’s press conference said, ““This is an important step in the growth and development of GRC, offering our sponsors and teams even more value this season than they could have possibly anticipated.”

The series has enjoyed quick growth in terms of securing a strong lineup of corporate backing.  Sponsorship deals have been inked with companies such as Puma, Discount Tire, GoPro, and Motegi Racing. A number of vehicle manufacturers have signed on to the GRC as well, including Hyundai, Ford, and Subaru, all of whom will field factory-supported teams in 2012.
