WELCOME, N.C. – Richard Childress Racing announced today that Smokey Mountain Herbal Snuff will serve as a primary sponsor for five races this season with NASCAR Nationwide Series drivers Brian Scott and Brendan Gaughan.

Scott and his No. 2 team will wear the company’s colors at Iowa Speedway on May 18, Indianapolis Motor Speedway on July 26, Richmond International Raceway on September 6 and Kansas Speedway on October 4. Gaughan and the No. 62 team will support the tobacco-free smokeless brand at Texas Motor Speedway on November 1. In addition to the five-race primary sponsorship, Smokey Mountain will also have an associate-sponsorship presence on both the No. 2 and No. 62 Camaros throughout the 2014 season.

Goodyear to Expand Use of Multi-Zone Tread Technology

Goodyear will expand the use of Multi-Zone Tread Technology in 2014. Goodyear’s Multi-Zone Tread technology features two distinct compounds in one tire. One zone is for enhanced traction and the other is for greater endurance.

Last year, Goodyear debuted the tires at Atlanta Motor Speedway, and used them again at the fall race at Kansas Speedway. While Goodyear still expects to run the multi-zone tread tires at Atlanta and Kansas again this year, they will also expand the program to Texas Motor Speedway and Richmond International Raceway at a minimum. If in-season tire tests go well, the program may be further expanded to other, unspecified tracks.

Goodyear director of race tire sales, Greg Stucker had this to say:

Atlanta is a unique track that presents several challenges for us as a tiremaker – it is extremely abrasive, but at the same time it’s extremely fast. While the Gen-6 car added even more speed to the equation, thus putting more stress on the right side tires, just going to a harder compound wasn’t a viable solution. The Multi-Zone Tread technology enabled us to maintain the tractive compound on the outside portion of the tread and toughen up the inside three inches to help protect the part of the right-side tire that sees a lot of heat.

Kansas, on the other hand, was a little more than a year on this side of a repave. And while the track seemed to have lost some grip, it had not yet begun to wear tires. For this case, we chose to increase the grip on the left side of the car with a more tractive, single-compound tire. We paired that with a Multi-Zone Tread right-side that combined the same compound we’d run there since the repave on the outside for traction with a tougher, more heat resistant compound on the inboard three inches for endurance.

What we accomplished in 2013 was proof of concept – both on the track and in the manufacturing process. Building off what we’ve learned, we will come back this season and add several tracks to the Multi-Zone Tread roster.

NASCAR vice president of competition Robin Pemberton also weighed in on the tire technology:

Goodyear continues to improve the competition with the development of new tire technology. The Multi-Zone Tread tire gives us the ability to optimize the tire for enhanced performance and racing on the track. The Multi-Zone Tread technology will give us better racing long-term. This means that Goodyear can not only build safer tires, but also tires that will allow for enhanced competition for both our competitors and our fans.

Hopefully the improvements in tire technology, along with the Gen 6 car, will continue to improve the racing product in NASCAR.

Texas Motor Speedway, Duck Commander Announce Naming Rights Deal

FORT WORTH, Texas – Duck Commander, the brand of the best-selling duck calls and name of the thriving family-owned company led by the Robertson clan of A&E’s “Duck Dynasty” fame, has signed a multi-year agreement to serve as title sponsor of the annual spring NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Texas Motor Speedway.

The largest-attended, single-day sporting event annually in Texas with estimated average crowds in excess of 150,000 will be known as the Duck Commander 500 with this year’s edition scheduled for Sunday, April 6. The two sides agreed to a three-year deal with a renewal option for an additional three years, but no financial terms of the agreement were announced.

“This is perhaps the most unique sponsorship in professional sports because not only does this come with special branding, it comes with celebrity spokespeople that are followed by tens of millions of people every week,” Texas Motor Speedway President Eddie Gossage said. “Fans will see members of the Robertson Family and cast of Duck Dynasty and all the rest during Duck Commander 500 week here at Texas Motor Speedway and we have produced some awesome merchandise that both race fans and Duck Commander fans will love. This marriage is perfection.”

“We’re excited about the partnership for the Duck Commander 500, being aligned with NASCAR, and to have our brand associated with an event of this magnitude,” shared Duck Commander CEO Willie Robertson. “We are all big fans of NASCAR and have been all our lives. It’s especially exciting to see our brand join to make it an awesome experience for the fan base and we can’t think of a better place than our neighbor at the Texas Motor Speedway.”

While the Robertson family emerged in the public eye and garnered immense popularity through A&E’s “Duck Dynasty” reality show that premiered in 2012, the Duck Commander brand has been the foundation of the family business of duck calls since patriarch Phil Robertson founded the company in 1972 in West Monroe, La.

Duck Commander has since flourished into a multi-million dollar business with Willie Robertson, one of Phil’s four sons, serving as the CEO of the enterprise that now encompasses more than 1,000 Duck Commander products and a powerful stable of licensees. This race entitlement diversifies Duck Commander’s business portfolio and will be unique in structure as the company will utilize their exclusive licensees to fund this sponsorship for the exposure and opportunities to align their product with their brand.

The Duck Commander brand also will enjoy a substantial product presence on its race weekend and throughout the year at Texas Motor Speedway. An extensive line of Duck Commander 500 merchandise will be sold at track and in the Speedway World souvenir store year-roundin addition to being available through Duck Commander retail partners.

Uncle Si’s Tea™ will be introduced and sold at track in single-serve options in both the sweet and unsweetened varieties. Texas Motor Speedway also will look to integrate products such as Duck Commander Family Foods’ BBQ sauce, salsa and beef jerky with the speedway signature concession items.

The Robertson family members also will have a strong presence on their race weekend, with several attending as well as having various VIP or honorary roles such as Grand Marshal or Honorary Starter.

Tickets for the Duck Commander 500 officially go on sale Friday, Feb. 14. Ryan Newman Spoils Hendrick Motorsports Dominating Day To Take Win At Martinsville

MARTINSVILLE, Va – If you would have told Rick Hendrick before the start of today’s race that his cars would lead 443 of the scheduled 500 laps he most likely would have felt fairly confident that he would be leaving his native Virginia with yet another famed grandfather clock, as well as the organization’s 200th all-time win, in tow.

NASCAR racing is known for having a way of turning the script upside down, even while it is being written.

After seeing Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, and Dale Earnhardt, Jr. up front all day, with Jeff Gordon leading 328 of the 443 laps led by Hendrick Motorsports, it was Stewart-Haas Racing’s Ryan Newman who came home victorious.

The win would come on the 19th anniversary of the passing of 1992 NASCAR Sprint Cup Champion Alan Kulwicki, a driver Newman admired greatly while growing up as a fellow Midwesterner and Engineering student.

Promotion Gives Fans Chance to Meet Daytona 500 Champ, Watch Dallas Mavericks Game From Luxury Suite

FORT WORTH, TX — Beginning today, Texas Motor Speedway is providing a unique “Night of Champions” promotion that will reward 18 fans with a meet-and-greet with the 2012 Daytona 500 champion as well as be entertained by the NBA World Champion Dallas Mavericks from a luxury suite.

Eighteen winners will receive two suite tickets to Tuesday evening’s game between the Mavericks and New Jersey Nets that will include a special visit by Sunday’s Daytona 500 winner in their suite at American Airlines Center.
